エネルギッシュ。
日本の音楽シーンで独自の地位を築いているジャズ・ミュージシャン、作曲家、ＣＭ音楽制作者、映画音楽制作者、大野雄二さんに先日インタヴューした。この模様は、次号のワックスポエティックス第3号（2009年3月15日発売予定）に掲載されるが、これがすごかった。
ワックスポエティックスでは基本はアメリカ版の翻訳記事を紹介しているのだが、毎号1－2本、日本発の記事を掲載している。ＤＪムロさんが、実はこの大野雄二さんのアナログをけっこう集めていて、その広範な音楽ジャンルをして、大野さんのことを「日本のボブ・ジェームス」と呼んでいるそうだ。そこで、クラブでも人気となっている大野さんに、もし可能であれば、インタヴューしようということになった。
あちこち巡って、結局、急遽インタヴューをさせていただくことになったのだが、準備期間がなく、ちょっと僕自身不安があったのだが、大野さんが書かれている本『ルパン三世 ジャズノート＆ＤＶＤ』を入手、これをじっくり読んで、インタヴューに臨んだ。なんとおもしろいことに、大野さんの自宅でインタヴューが行われることになったが、そこがうちから徒歩7分くらいのところ。普段、車で移動するときはその横の道をほとんど毎日のように通っているあたりだった。
いやあ、しかし、なんとインタヴュー5時間半ですよ。本当に、エネルギッシュです。次から次へと話が尽きない。この長さは、僕が大滝（大瀧）詠一＆鈴木雅之・対談の6時間超に継ぐもの。僕の長いインタヴュー歴史の中でも、ベスト5に入るすばらしいものになった。
詳しくは、ワックスポエティックス誌をごらん頂くとしても、順に熱海に生まれた少年時代から、慶應高校に入ってカルチャー・ショック以上の劇的な衝撃を受け、ジャズにのめりこみ、ひょんなご縁からＣＭ音楽を作り出すようになり、さらに、テレビ番組の音楽（「ルパン三世」ほか）、映画音楽（「野生の証明」ほか多数の角川映画作品）をてがけ、そして、ここ10数年は再びジャズに戻っているというその音楽変遷はドラマ以上のドラマだ。話は、必ずひとつの答えから次へ脱線する。それが実におもしろい。学生時代、ピアノを弾き出したときに当時のキャバレーで演奏しだすようになったときの話など、実に楽しい。
そして、大野さんが、これほどソウル、ブラック・ミュージック好きとは知らなかった。シカゴ・チェスのリチャード・エヴァンス、ラムゼイ・ルイス、マーヴィン・ゲイ、ダニー・ハザウェイ、グラント・グリーン、プロデューサーとしてのアリフ・マーディン、クインシー・ジョンーンズ、クリード・テイラー、トミー・リピューマなどなど、話は尽きない。
最近は、「引き算のプレイ」を覚えたという大野さんは、「ファンキー」「グルーヴ」に関しても一家言ある。ジャズの娯楽性という点において、「エンタテインメント」と「アート」のギリギリの境界線を歩むという話、自分は裏方なのでテレビには演奏させてくれない限り出ない、という話など、音楽談義は止まらなかった。

ロンドン生まれのナイジェリア人というユニークな出自を持つシンガー・ソングライター、シールの最新作、スタジオ・アルバムとしては6作目が出たが、このタイトルが、ずばり『ソウル』というもの。なんと、全14曲（日本盤ボーナストラック2曲含む）、ソウルの大ヒットのカヴァー集だ。
どんな曲が入っているかというと全14曲は次の通り。

いやいや、この選曲には参った。これを昨日『ソウル・ブレンズ』「山野ミュージック・ジャム」でご紹介したが、「ア・チェンジ・イズ・ゴナ・カム」と「愛しすぎて」をかけた。前者などかけると、その冒頭から、ＤＪマーヴィンはもう泣き崩れる。（笑） 僕が聞く。「これは、そんなに教会で歌われるの？ ゴスペルとして」 「歌われるよ。こんな太ったおばちゃんなんかが、みんな涙ボロボロになるよ～～。これは、ゴスペルだよ～～」
サム・クックの名曲、オバマ登場の2009年にはどんぴしゃだ。ヘッドフォンで、歌詞カードを見ながら聴いていると、本当に胸に来る1曲だ。そして、もう一曲はオーティスの「愛しすぎて」。これなんぞ、オーティスをよく研究しているというか。実に味わい深い。シールの歌声って聴きやすいという印象があったのだが、この作品だけは、いやいやどうして、すごいディープだ。ということは、やはり楽曲がディープということなのだろうか。
しかも、驚いたことにこれをプロデュースしたのがデイヴィッド・フォスターという事実。
全14曲、アル・グリーン曲が2曲（４と９）、カーティス・メイフィールド曲が2曲（６と１２）とこの2人だけ2曲選曲されているのがおもしろい。
ふと思ったのが、アレサ、マーヴィン、アイズレー、ボビーあたりが入っていないこと。まあ、候補は何十曲とあったのだろう。3週間でレコーディングが終わったそうなので、これなら、また第２作もすぐにできるにちがいない。彼に歌って欲しい曲リストならたちどころに作れます。ソウル・カヴァーだけのライヴなんてやらないのかなあ…。

サンフランシスコ・ベイエリアの超ヴェテラン、タワー・オブ・パワーの最新作、その名も『アメリカン・ソウルブック』が2009年2月4日、リリースされる。ロッド・スチュワートの大ヒット作『グレイト・アメリカン・ソングブック』にヒントを得たタイトルで、タワーのものは、ソウル・ソングでまとめた。
昨日ご紹介したシールは、かなり有名どころのソウル曲を選んでいるが、このソウル・カヴァー集は、けっこう珍しい曲を選んでいる。たとえば、1曲目「ユー・メット・ユア・マッチ」は、1968年のスティーヴィー・ワンダーの小ヒット。「ラヴ・ランド」は、チャールズ・ライト＆ザ・ワッツ・103ＲＤ（ハンドレッド・サード）・ストリート・リズム・バンドの1970年のヒットといった具合。日本盤ボーナスとなっている「バックフィールド・イン・モーション」は、メル＆ティムのヒットだ。これなんか、実にタワー・サウンドになじむ。
また、サム＆デイヴの「アイ・サンキュー」をトム・ジョーンズが歌ったり、そのサム・ムーアが、オーティス・レディングの曲を歌ったりと憎い演出もある。マーヴィン＆タミーの名唱をジョス・ストーンが歌うのも興味深い。
次回の来日時には、このアルバムからの曲の演奏が増えるかもしれない。楽しみだ。

★【マーヴィン・ゲイ自伝翻訳・遅々として…進む…】
カウントダウン。
2009年4月に発売予定のマーヴィン・ゲイ唯一の自伝『ディヴァイデッド・ソウル～引き裂かれたソウル』（デイヴィッド・リッツ著＝ブルース・インターアクションズから発売）の翻訳作業に没頭している。現在、本文340ページのうち、昨日までで288ページまで来た。あと52ページ、もうひといきだ。
マーヴィンが『離婚伝説』を出し、なんとか、最初の妻アンナとの離婚が成立し、しかし二度目の妻ジャンともうまくいかず、ジャンはテディー・ペンダーグラスとできてしまい、マーヴィンは失意のうちにロンドンにいつく。このロンドンでのマーヴィンは廃人同様で、どうしようもなく落ちぶれており、そこからどうやって這い上がっていくことができるのか。日々ドラッグに溺れ、しかし、そのドラッグ代はなく、彼は一文無し。新作の録音もままならないために、モータウンからの一銭ももらえず、まさに路頭に迷っていると言ってもいいどん底状態だ。
彼の人生には問題が山積している。税金・経済問題（自宅は没収され、滞納の税金の支払いを迫られている）、女性問題（一番愛しているジャンとうまくいかない）、ドラッグ問題（ずっとドラッグ中毒で、そこから抜け出せない）で八方塞り、自ら死を望むかのような状況にさえ陥る。
マーヴィンはこの後ベルギーのオステンドへ逃避行。そこで、かの「セクシュアル・ヒーリング」の原型が生まれるが、モータウンとの契約をどのように切るのか。ベリー・ゴーディーとの確執をどのように解決するのか。
マーヴィンの人生、そしてキャラクターには、すべて二面性がある。神的存在と、超俗人としての存在、音楽に没頭する男と、ドラッグに溺れる男、クリエイティヴでは完璧なアーティストだが、自堕落なだめ人間。プライドは誰よりも高いが、実は気がものすごく小さく、嫉妬深い。すべて彼の魂は2つに引き裂かれているのだ。だから、ディヴァイデッド・ソウル。幼少の頃からの実父との確執、父に愛されたいと思いつつも、一度も愛されなかったことが、大きなトラウマとなっているその人生。そして、2人は最後までお互い相容れることはなかった。
この本を読んだ映画人なら、だれでもこれを映画化したいと思うことがよくわかる。これほど、劇的な、しかも状況なども完璧なドラマなどなかなかない。事実は小説より奇なりとはよくいったものだ。
ちょうど今翻訳が進んでいるところは、マーヴィンの人生が「セクシュアル・ヒーリング」、そして凱旋公演へと一歩一歩進むあたりだ。それは、まさにマーヴィンの終焉へのカウントダウンだ。そして、翻訳作業もいよいよカウントダウン。ご期待ください。

彼の人生には問題が山積している。税金・経済問題（自宅は没収され、滞納の税金の支払いを迫られている）、女性問題（一番愛しているジャンとうまくいかない）、ドラッグ問題（ずっとドラッグ中毒で、そこから抜け出せない）で八方塞り、自ら死を望むかのような状況にさえ陥る。
マーヴィンはこの後ベルギーのオステンドへ逃避行。そこで、かの「セクシュアル・ヒーリング」の原型が生まれるが、モータウンとの契約をどのように切るのか。ベリー・ゴーディーとの確執をどのように解決するのか。
マーヴィンの人生、そしてキャラクターには、すべて二面性がある。神的存在と、超俗人としての存在、音楽に没頭する男と、ドラッグに溺れる男、クリエイティヴでは完璧なアーティストだが、自堕落なだめ人間。プライドは誰よりも高いが、実は気がものすごく小さく、嫉妬深い。すべて彼の魂は2つに引き裂かれているのだ。だから、ディヴァイデッド・ソウル。幼少の頃からの実父との確執、父に愛されたいと思いつつも、一度も愛されなかったことが、大きなトラウマとなっているその人生。そして、2人は最後までお互い相容れることはなかった。
この本を読んだ映画人なら、だれでもこれを映画化したいと思うことがよくわかる。これほど、劇的な、しかも状況なども完璧なドラマなどなかなかない。事実は小説より奇なりとはよくいったものだ。
ちょうど今翻訳が進んでいるところは、マーヴィンの人生が「セクシュアル・ヒーリング」、そして凱旋公演へと一歩一歩進むあたりだ。それは、まさにマーヴィンの終焉へのカウントダウンだ。そして、翻訳作業もいよいよカウントダウン。ご期待ください。

ゲネプロ。
2月4日から始まったシルク・ド・ソレイユの出し物『コルテオ』の公開ゲネプロを見た。昨年『ドラリオン』を見ていたので、時間をやりくりし行ってしまった。舞台が360度になっていて、その両サイドからちゃんと見られる構図でよく出来ている。いろいろな演目があり、それぞれおもしろかった。それぞれは、言葉やストーリーがわからなくても、圧倒させられる。「コルテオ」とはイタリア語で「行列」のことだそう。
その場で見たときはストーリーがわからなかった。言葉も英語やイタリア語、たまに日本語なども飛び出すが、あんまりよくわからなかった。しかし、パンフレットを読んでみると、後からなるほどと思った。なので、これから行かれる方はぜひ始まる前にパンフを熟読されるといいと思う。
やはり人間というのは、練習すれば何でもできるんだな、すごいなあと思う。一番印象に残ったのは、下記セットリストで第二部７の「デュオ・ストラップス」というもの。2人が天井から吊るされた紐にからみついて空中で踊るというもの。その後の、天井でＥＴみたいに自転車が空を飛ぶのもよかった。第一部の「ヘリウム・ダンス」も楽しい。

ＮＨＫ－ＦＭで尾臺順子さんの『ソウル・ミュージック』（2009年2月5日＝木曜・夜11時から）をマーヴィン・ゲイの翻訳作業をしながら聴いた。先週の中尾さんの訃報を、このソウル・サーチンのブログ(2009年1月29日付け）で知った方がお便りをたくさん番組にお寄せになったようだ。微力ながら力添えできてよかったと思う。
葬儀後初の収録となった尾臺さん、さすがにこの日は、きっと相当つらかったのではないかと思う。たぶん、収録も何度も録音をストップさせてやり直したのではないだろうか。編集されたかのようで、声のトーンが何度も違っていた。「ああ、ここで（録音を一旦）止めたのかな」などと思うと、いたたまれなくなった。彼女の中尾さんへの言葉は、優しさと愛情にあふれたもので、本当に胸に響いた。

2008年度、第51回グラミー賞のノミネートは全部で110部門。恒例その大予想パート１。発表は2009年2月8日（日曜＝午後5時＝日本時間9日・月曜午前10時から）、ロスアンジェルスのステイプルズ・センターで行われる。中継はＣＢＳ。日本では有料衛星放送ＷＯＷＯＷ。12月17日までに投票権のある会員に投票用紙が郵送され、会員は1月14日までに返送、その後集計され、2月8日に発表される。ノミネート対象作品は2007年10月1日から2008年9月30日までに全米でリリースされたものとなっている。
今年の最多はリル・ウェインの「アルバム」を含む8部門、コールドプレイが7部門、さらに、カニエ・ウェスト、ジェイＺ、ニーヨが6部門でノミネートされている。
今年は、かなりむずかしい。よくわからないことが多い。なんとなく、コールド・プレイが軸になるような気がする。

予想。
2008年度、第51回グラミー賞のノミネートは全部で110部門。恒例その大予想、パート２。ジャズ、ブルーズ部門など。
発表は2009年2月8日（日曜＝午後5時＝日本時間9日・月曜午前10時から）、ロスアンジェルスのステイプルズ・センターで行われる。中継はＣＢＳ。日本では有料衛星放送ＷＯＷＯＷ。12月17日までに投票権のある会員に投票用紙が郵送され、会員は1月14日までに返送、その後集計され、2月8日に発表される。ノミネート対象作品は2007年10月1日から2008年9月30日までに全米でリリースされたものとなっている。
本ソウル・サーチンでは今年は44部門で予想を立てた。目標は本命で5割、本命対抗合わせて8割といったところ。ちなみに直近過去の予想と的中率は次のとおり。 なお予想に関しては、82年くらいからずっと音楽業界紙に発表していてそのデータがどこかにあるのだが、いつか探したいと思う。87年以降のものは、原稿がデジタル化されているので残っているはず。

2008年度、第51回グラミー賞のノミネートは全部で110部門。恒例その大予想、パート２。ジャズ、ブルーズ部門など。
発表は2009年2月8日（日曜＝午後5時＝日本時間9日・月曜午前10時から）、ロスアンジェルスのステイプルズ・センターで行われる。中継はＣＢＳ。日本では有料衛星放送ＷＯＷＯＷ。12月17日までに投票権のある会員に投票用紙が郵送され、会員は1月14日までに返送、その後集計され、2月8日に発表される。ノミネート対象作品は2007年10月1日から2008年9月30日までに全米でリリースされたものとなっている。
本ソウル・サーチンでは今年は44部門で予想を立てた。目標は本命で5割、本命対抗合わせて8割といったところ。ちなみに直近過去の予想と的中率は次のとおり。 なお予想に関しては、82年くらいからずっと音楽業界紙に発表していてそのデータがどこかにあるのだが、いつか探したいと思う。87年以降のものは、原稿がデジタル化されているので残っているはず。

今回のグラミー賞主要4部門は、イギリス勢の活躍が目立つ。主要3部門15ノミネートのうちのべ11 作品がイギリス系。昨年は、エイミー・ワインハウスがいいところを持っていったが、その勢いでイギリス勢が今年も獲得していくのだろう。
コールドプレイは、3部門独占も十分あると思うが、アデルもいいところでノミネートされている。アデルがもし取るとすると、取りそうなのは「ソング」で、一番メインの「レコード」はやはり、コールドプレイという気がする。アデルは「新人賞」もいけそうなので、アデルとコールドプレイで2個ずつわけることになる。また、コールドプレイ３、新人アデルも十分あり。アデルのサウンド、曲調は昨年のエイミーを思わせるものがあり、エイミーを好んだグラミー投票者を考えると意外といいところにいくのかもしれない。「レコード」「アルバム」でヴェテランのロバート・プラントがノミネートされているが、これは、昨年のハービー・ハンコック的な大穴的獲得の可能性はある。また、レオナ・ルイスはグラミー投票者好みの王道シンガー。どこまで支持を伸ばすか。だが、今年はコールドプレイが大本命だろう。

2008年度、第51回グラミー賞が2009年2月8日（日曜＝午後5時＝日本時間9日・月曜午前10時から）、ロスアンジェルスのステイプルズ・センターで行われた。主要４部門で、「レコード」と「アルバム」は、ロバート・プラント＆アリソン・クラウス（対抗予想）、「新人賞」は、アデル（本命予想）、「ソング」でコールドプレイ（対抗予想）になった。結局、ロバート・プラント＆アリソン・クラウス対コールドプレイの一騎打ちとなった形で、ロバートたちの2勝1敗。（ロバートたちは、「ソング」にはノミネートされていなかった） ロバートたちは5部門ノミネート全部での受賞となり、この夜最大の勝者となった。ロバートたちの受賞は、昨年のハービー・ハンコック的なある意味グラミーらしいということかもしれない。いずれにせよ、主要4部門はすべてイギリス関係（ロバート・プラントはイギリスだが、アリソンはアメリカ）というのも印象的だ。
ソウル・サーチャー的にライヴ・パフォーマンスで印象に残ったのはフォー・トップスのシーン。昨年リード・シンガー、リーヴァイ・スタッブスが亡くなり、オリジナル・メンバーはアブドゥール・デューク・ファキールだけになってしまった。そのアブドゥールを囲み、旧友のスモーキー・ロビンソン、そして、若手のニーヨ、ジェイミー・フォックスがその場のフォー・トップスを結成して、「リーチ・アウト・アイル・ビー・ゼア」、「スタンディング・イン・ザ・シャドーズ・オブ・モータウン」、「アイ・キャント・ヘルプ・マイセルフ」を披露した。ジェニファー・ハドソンもよかった。
今年はリル・ウェインがノミネート8部門中4部門、コールドプレイが7部門中3部門を受賞。

2008年度、第51回グラミー賞が2009年2月8日（日曜＝午後5時＝日本時間9日・月曜午前10時から）、ロスアンジェルスのステイプルズ・センターで行われた。主要４部門で、「レコード」と「アルバム」は、ロバート・プラント＆アリソン・クラウス（対抗予想）、「新人賞」は、アデル（本命予想）、「ソング」でコールドプレイ（対抗予想）になった。結局、ロバート・プラント＆アリソン・クラウス対コールドプレイの一騎打ちとなった形で、ロバートたちの2勝1敗。（ロバートたちは、「ソング」にはノミネートされていなかった） ロバートたちは5部門ノミネート全部での受賞となり、この夜最大の勝者となった。ロバートたちの受賞は、昨年のハービー・ハンコック的なある意味グラミーらしいということかもしれない。いずれにせよ、主要4部門はすべてイギリス関係（ロバート・プラントはイギリスだが、アリソンはアメリカ）というのも印象的だ。
ソウル・サーチャー的にライヴ・パフォーマンスで印象に残ったのはフォー・トップスのシーン。昨年リード・シンガー、リーヴァイ・スタッブスが亡くなり、オリジナル・メンバーはアブドゥール・デューク・ファキールだけになってしまった。そのアブドゥールを囲み、旧友のスモーキー・ロビンソン、そして、若手のニーヨ、ジェイミー・フォックスがその場のフォー・トップスを結成して、「リーチ・アウト・アイル・ビー・ゼア」、「スタンディング・イン・ザ・シャドーズ・オブ・モータウン」、「アイ・キャント・ヘルプ・マイセルフ」を披露した。ジェニファー・ハドソンもよかった。
今年はリル・ウェインがノミネート8部門中4部門、コールドプレイが7部門中3部門を受賞。

クライヴのプレ・グラミー・パーティーは7日夜にビヴァリー・ヒルズのホテルで行われた。この日のハイライトは、ホイットニー・ヒューストンで、いよいよカンバックが期待されているところ。パーティーのフィナーレを飾り、ヒット曲のメドレーで満員の業界関係者を圧倒した。出席者によれば、彼女は、完璧にシラフで、ドラッグもまったくやっていないようで、健康的だった、という。母であるシシー・ヒューストンも帯同していたが、シシーは足を悪くしたためか杖をついていた、という。

●【第51回グラミー賞、ソウル・サーチャー的にもっとも印象に残った瞬間】

これも、昨年一度書いてみてちょっと好評だったので、第51回グラミー賞、ソウル・サーチャー的印象に残った10のモーメンツ。
１． ジェニファー・ハドソンの歌い終えた後の声にならない「サンキュー」と言った瞬間。感動…。（これについては昨日書きました）冒頭のホイットニー・ヒューストンからの受賞（ベスト・Ｒ＆Ｂアルバム部門）もよかった。
２．ライヴ・パフォーマンスを見るサー・ポール・マッカートニーの、心なしか、「なぜＮＡＲＡＳは僕にグラミーをくれないの」という寂しげな様子。
３．フォー・トップス・トリビュートのバックで、キーボードにグレッグ・フィリンゲーンズを発見した瞬間。
４．同じくフォー・トップス・トリビュートのバックで、マイ・バディー、バシリ・ジョンソンらしき人物を発見した瞬間。バシリはニューヨークのトップ・パーカッション奏者。ホイットニー・ヒューストンやスティーヴ・ウィンウッドなどでも来日し、個人的にいつのまにか仲良くなったグッド・ガイ。あのフォー・トップスは誰がバンマスだったんだろう。何度かこのシーンを見たら、わかった。リッキー・マイナーがバンマスだった。

５．ジャスティン・ティンバーブレイクとアル・グリーンの家がものすごく近かったということを知った瞬間。
６．レコード・オブ・ジ・イヤーを獲得したアリソン・クラウスが、ロバート・プラントと会わせてくれた人物として、ビル・フラナガンの名前を口にした瞬間。ビルはビルボードなどにも記事を寄稿していた音楽評論家。自身の体験を元に「Ａ＆Ｒ」（新潮文庫）という小説も書いている。調べてみたら、彼自身にはグラミーのトロフィー自体はいかないようだが、少なくとも、ステージには上がっていた。とても光栄なはず。

さて、レコードを受賞したロバート・プラントらの作品は、なんとインディペンデント系のラウンダー・レコードからリリースされていた。それを考えると、グラミーをこれだけ取ったというのは、さらに快挙と言える。普通、インディ系のものは、なかなか票を集められないからだ。メジャー作品は、投票権を持つメジャーの社員などが自社作品に投票する可能性が高いので、票を集めやすい。ラウンダーはいい良質のルーツ的な音楽を出しているレーベル。そうした音楽が認められたということでもある。
７．毎度ＣＭタイムとなるＮＡＲＡＳ会長ニール・ポートナウがその怠惰なスピーチの中で、何度もオバマ大統領の「イエス・ウィ・キャン」を言うものの、まったく「イエス・ウィ・キャン（私たちは、出来る！）」な感じがしなくて、「イエス・ウィ・キャント」な雰囲気が漂った瞬間。同じ言葉を発するだけでも、オバマが言うと、「イエス・ウィ・キャン」な感じなんだよなあ。（笑）ニールが言うと、思わず、「No, you can’t」と相槌を打ってしまいそうな瞬間。
８．同じくフォー・トップスの紹介のところで、スモーキー・ロビンソンが、Duke Fakirの発音をデューク・フェイカーと言っていたこと。僕はずっとファキールだと思っていたので、これ以後はフェイカーと表記するようにしようかと思ったら、別のビデオなどでファキールと言ってるのもあった。でも近いスモーキーが言うのであれば、フェイカーが正しそうに思える…。
９．同じくフォー・トップスのところで、ニーヨがトップスのオリジナル・メンバー、オービー・ベンソンに一瞬見えてしまった瞬間。乗り移ったかと思った。
10．一番最後のスティーヴィーの歌が時間切れで途中で終わってしまった瞬間。あれは残念でした。（笑）

■【ビル・ウィザース～大野雄二インタヴュー～ワックスポエティックス第3号】
Ａ＆Ｒ。
マーヴィン・ゲイの自伝『マーヴィン・ゲイ物語～引き裂かれたソウル』の翻訳作業が続く中、ワックスポエティックス第3号の原稿も佳境に。今回僕が手がけるのは、先日ここでも少し書いた大野雄二さんインタヴューと、ビル・ウィザースのロング・インタヴューの翻訳。大野さんのほうは、指定は当初5800字程度だったが、削って起こしてそれでも12000字くらい。結局、7000字の枠でまとめさせてもらうことになった。まあ、とにかく5時間半ですから、それでも4分の１くらいでしょうか。（笑） これぞまさに「エディット」（編集）だ。テープを起こすのも地獄、削るのも地獄だあ。（笑）エディットする人＝エディターとは、うまいことを言ったもんです。
ビル・ウィザースは、以前、デイヴィッド・リッツが書いたビルのＣＤのライナーノーツを翻訳したことがあったが、実に朴訥（ぼくとつ）とした自然派の素晴らしい人物。その彼らしさがよく出たインタヴューだ。原文が5500ワードくらいあるので、15000字くらいになりそう。これは全文掲載できるはず。

Ａ＆Ｒ。
マーヴィン・ゲイの自伝『マーヴィン・ゲイ物語～引き裂かれたソウル』の翻訳作業が続く中、ワックスポエティックス第3号の原稿も佳境に。今回僕が手がけるのは、先日ここでも少し書いた大野雄二さんインタヴューと、ビル・ウィザースのロング・インタヴューの翻訳。大野さんのほうは、指定は当初5800字程度だったが、削って起こしてそれでも12000字くらい。結局、7000字の枠でまとめさせてもらうことになった。まあ、とにかく5時間半ですから、それでも4分の１くらいでしょうか。（笑） これぞまさに「エディット」（編集）だ。テープを起こすのも地獄、削るのも地獄だあ。（笑）エディットする人＝エディターとは、うまいことを言ったもんです。
ビル・ウィザースは、以前、デイヴィッド・リッツが書いたビルのＣＤのライナーノーツを翻訳したことがあったが、実に朴訥（ぼくとつ）とした自然派の素晴らしい人物。その彼らしさがよく出たインタヴューだ。原文が5500ワードくらいあるので、15000字くらいになりそう。これは全文掲載できるはず。

昨年（2008年）4月、現在の三軒茶屋で再スタートをはかったソウル・バー「ストリート・カフェ」が来る2009年2月22日（日曜)で、一時休業することになった。2月22日は最終日ということで、ストリート・カフェ・オールスター・ライヴと題してワンダラーズ、イクミ・リーサウェイ＆ザ・フィーヴァーズなどのライヴを行う。ＤＪに自由が丘のソウル・バー「オハイオ」のキンヤさんが入ることになった。
「ストリート・カフェ」は1997年11月に世田谷通り沿いにオープン。2007年4月、水道管の事故で閉店を余儀なくされ、2008年4月、心機一転三軒茶屋に物件を見つけ、再オープンした。今回はマスター長野さんの個人的事情で一時休業することになった。また長野さん夫婦の一人娘ミーこと未聖（みさと）さんは昨年結婚し、2008年11月29日に女の子が誕生。現在子育てのため、マスターの後をすぐには引き継げないという。

しばらく前に、デイヴィッド・Ｔ・ウォーカーのオード・レーベル時代の作品が日本初ＣＤ化されたが、同じレーベルでアルバムを残したブラック・シンガー、メリー・クレイトンの作品3枚が、2009年4月22日、ビデオアーツからリリースされる。
今回リリースされるタイトルは『ギミー・シェルター』（1970年作品）、『メリー・クレイトン』（1971年作品）、『キープ・ユア・アイ・オン・スパロウ』（1975年作品）。いずれの作品も1970年代初期のロス・アンジェルス・スタジオ・シーンの人気ミュージシャンたちが勢ぞろいしているもので、参加ミュージシャンは、デイヴィッドＴ、ジョー・サンプル、ボビー・ハンフリー、ウィルトン・フェルダー、ビリー・プレストンなど。3枚目の『キープ…』は、ジーン・マクダニエルズ・プロデュースでニューヨーク録音だけに、スティーヴ・ガッド、ボブ・ジェームス、ラルフ・マクドナルドなどが参加している。
メリー・クレイトンの当時のブラック・ミュージック・シーンにおける立ち位置はユニークで、いわゆるアレサ・フランクリン、グラディス・ナイトなどを頂点とするソウル・シンガーの世界とは一線を画するところにいた。ちょうど、ロバータ・フラックやダニー・ハザウェイらのニュー・ソウル・アーティスト、また、ジャズ的アプローチもあるシンガーといったところだった。ソウル・ファンというよりも、むしろジャズ・ファン、のちに誕生するフュージョン系のファンなどから支持された。
メリー・クレイトンは、1948年12月25日ルイジアナ州ニューオーリーンズ生まれ。ゴスペルからソウルに転じ、シンガーとして活躍。ボビー・ダーリンとデュエットを歌ったり、レイ・チャールズのバックコーラス、レイレッツにいたこともあった。1969年、ローリング・ストーンズとともに「ギミー・シェルター」を歌い注目を集めた。これはストーンズは、もともとボニー・レイットで録音しようとおもっていたものの、ボニーが病気か何かで録音できず、彼女が代役を務めた。その後、ライナード・スキナードの「スイート・ホーム・アラバマ」でもコーラスをつけている。1970年、オード・レコードと契約、上記3枚のアルバムを出した。
長らくこれらの作品は流通しておらず、今回の3枚はすべて世界初ＣＤ化、しかも紙ジャケットで出るという。
当時聴いたときは、それほど黒いとは思わなかったが、今改めて聴くとずいぶん黒かったんだなあ、と感じた。時代、取り巻く環境が変わっているわけだ。

昨日も書いたが、１から9まではギャンブル＆ハフがフィラデルフィア・インターナショナル・レコードを設立する以前のヒットだ。７曲目の「ディドゥント・アイ」は、最近では映画『ジャッキー・ブラウン』(1997年）にもうまいポイントで使われていたのが印象的だった。
保釈金融業者のマックス・チェリー(ロバート・フォースター) と武器密売人オデール・ロビー(サミュエル・L・ジャクソン)の2人が、一緒にマックスのオフィースに行く時、車の中でたまたまデルフォニックスのカセットテープ（！）が流れる。ちょうど「ディドゥント・アイ」だった。
ちょっと記憶で書くので、確かではないかもしれないが、マックス（白人）がデルフォニックスなどというソウル・ミュージックを聴いてて、黒人のオデール（サミュエル・ジャクソン）が驚いた顔をする。あそこの瞬間には「お前、なんで白人のくせに黒人が聴くソウルのデルフォニックスなんか聴いてるんだ？」という驚き、意外さが含まれていたと思う。
マックスはもちろんデルフォニックスなどを知らなかったのだが、その直前にジャッキー・ブラウン（パム・グリア＝黒人）と会って、オデールをはめる計画を打ち合わせているときに、そのＢＧＭで流れていたのがデルフォニックスで、それが気にいってレコード屋に行きデルフォニックスのテープを買い求め、車で聴いていたのだ。つまり、マックスはジャッキーからこのデルフォニックスの存在を教わっていた。
だから、マックスは、サミュエルにデルフォニックスを聴いているのかと言われ、どきっとしたはずなのだ。つまり、このデルフォニックスをキーワードに、マックスとジャッキーのつながりを推測されたら、すべてがパーになってしまうというシーンなのである。
あの「ディドゥント・アイ」の使われ方が絶妙だった。タランティーノらしい天才的うまさだと思った。
というわけで、「ディドゥント・アイ」は、黒人・白人間の微妙な緊張度合いを描いたシーンで使われた1曲でした、というお話でした。（この話、前にどこかでしたか、書いたかしたような気がするのですが、ホームページ開設以前だったような気がするので、書きました）

保釈金融業者のマックス・チェリー(ロバート・フォースター) と武器密売人オデール・ロビー(サミュエル・L・ジャクソン)の2人が、一緒にマックスのオフィースに行く時、車の中でたまたまデルフォニックスのカセットテープ（！）が流れる。ちょうど「ディドゥント・アイ」だった。
ちょっと記憶で書くので、確かではないかもしれないが、マックス（白人）がデルフォニックスなどというソウル・ミュージックを聴いてて、黒人のオデール（サミュエル・ジャクソン）が驚いた顔をする。あそこの瞬間には「お前、なんで白人のくせに黒人が聴くソウルのデルフォニックスなんか聴いてるんだ？」という驚き、意外さが含まれていたと思う。
マックスはもちろんデルフォニックスなどを知らなかったのだが、その直前にジャッキー・ブラウン（パム・グリア＝黒人）と会って、オデールをはめる計画を打ち合わせているときに、そのＢＧＭで流れていたのがデルフォニックスで、それが気にいってレコード屋に行きデルフォニックスのテープを買い求め、車で聴いていたのだ。つまり、マックスはジャッキーからこのデルフォニックスの存在を教わっていた。
だから、マックスは、サミュエルにデルフォニックスを聴いているのかと言われ、どきっとしたはずなのだ。つまり、このデルフォニックスをキーワードに、マックスとジャッキーのつながりを推測されたら、すべてがパーになってしまうというシーンなのである。
あの「ディドゥント・アイ」の使われ方が絶妙だった。タランティーノらしい天才的うまさだと思った。
というわけで、「ディドゥント・アイ」は、黒人・白人間の微妙な緊張度合いを描いたシーンで使われた1曲でした、というお話でした。（この話、前にどこかでしたか、書いたかしたような気がするのですが、ホームページ開設以前だったような気がするので、書きました）

2009年2月15日、作家の村上春樹氏がイスラエルの文学賞「エルサレム賞」を受賞し、それを受け取る席でスピーチをした。その中で、イスラエルを批判する内容のスピーチをしたことが一部伝えられた。しかし、日本の報道では、オバマ大統領の就任スピーチのように全文が掲載されることもなく、全容がよくわからない。報道によれば、村上氏は15分もスピーチしたという。イスラエルの新聞に出たものはせいぜい400ワード。これだと、読んでも5分にも満たない。そこでいろいろ探したが全文テキストはまだ発見できていない。
ひとつ、やはりイスラエルのサイトに村上春樹著ということで英文が載っていた。これだと1500ワードで、読みの速さにもよるが音読してみると12－3分くらいになる。しかし、伝えられた文章と少し語句が違ったりする。いずれ、スピーチ全文がどこかに出るとは思われるが、速報としてこれをアップしておきたい。なお、イタリックはＡＰ通信の配信のもの。下記の文章は、大変感動的だ。今、全部は訳せないので、スピーチの部分訳は他の方がヴォランティアで訳されているものにリンクをはった。

彼が話したスピーチ全編をyoutubeでもいいので見てみたい。そして、そのテキスト全文を早く読んでみたい。仮タイトルは、壁と卵。これはとてもよく練られた名スピーチだと思う。酩酊映像を流す時間があったら、こっちに存分に時間を割いて、村上氏のスピーチ全編をノーカットで流して欲しい。これだけのものを英語で人前で話せるということだけでも、日本人の誇りだ。（スピーチはオバマのほうがうまいが…（笑）） 今週、我々日本人は、世界に誇れる日本人と、世界の恥さらし日本人の両方を同時に見せられたのだ。

So I have come to Jerusalem today as a novelist, which is to say as a professional spinner of lies.
Of course, novelists are not the only ones who tell lies. Politicians do it, too, (sorry, Mr. President) as we all know. Diplomats and military men tell their own kinds of lies on occasion, as do used car salesmen, butchers and builders. The lies of novelists differ from others, however, in that no one criticizes the novelist as immoral for telling them. Indeed, the bigger and better his lies and the more ingeniously he creates them, the more he is likely to be praised by the public and the critics. Why should that be?
My answer would be this: Namely, that by telling skillful lies - which is to say, by making up fictions that appear to be true - the novelist can bring a truth out to a new location and shine a new light on it. In most cases, it is virtually impossible to grasp a truth in its original form and depict it accurately. This is why we try to grab its tail by luring the truth from its hiding place, transferring it to a fictional location, and replacing it with a fictional form. In order to accomplish this, however, we first have to clarify where the truth lies within us. This is an important qualification for making up good lies.
Today, however, I have no intention of lying. I will try to be as honest as I can. There are a few days in the year when I do not engage in telling lies, and today happens to be one of them.
So let me tell you the truth. A fair number of people advised me not to come here to accept the Jerusalem Prize. Some even warned me they would instigate a boycott of my books if I came.
The reason for this, of course, was the fierce battle that was raging in Gaza. The UN reported that more than a thousand people had lost their lives in the blockaded Gaza City, many of them unarmed citizens - children and old people.
Any number of times after receiving notice of the award, I asked myself whether traveling to Israel at a time like this and accepting a literary prize was the proper thing to do, whether this would create the impression that I supported one side in the conflict, that I endorsed the policies of a nation that chose to unleash its overwhelming military power. This is an impression, of course, that I would not wish to give. I do not approve of any war, and I do not support any nation. Neither, of course, do I wish to see my books subjected to a boycott.
Finally, however, after careful consideration, I made up my mind to come here. One reason for my decision was that all too many people advised me not to do it. Perhaps, like many other novelists, I tend to do the exact opposite of what I am told. If people are telling me - and especially if they are warning me - "don’t go there," "don’t do that," I tend to want to "go there" and "do that." It’s in my nature, you might say, as a novelist. Novelists are a special breed. They cannot genuinely trust anything they have not seen with their own eyes or touched with their own hands.
And that is why I am here. I chose to come here rather than stay away. I chose to see for myself rather than not to see. I chose to speak to you rather than to say nothing.
This is not to say that I am here to deliver a political message. To make judgments about right and wrong is one of the novelist’s most important duties, of course.
It is left to each writer, however, to decide upon the form in which he or she will convey those judgments to others. I myself prefer to transform them into stories - stories that tend toward the surreal. Which is why I do not intend to stand before you today delivering a direct political message.
Please do, however, allow me to deliver one very personal message. It is something that I always keep in mind while I am writing fiction. I have never gone so far as to write it on a piece of paper and paste it to the wall: Rather, it is carved into the wall of my mind, and it goes something like this:
"Between a high, solid wall and an egg that breaks against it, I will always stand on the side of the egg."
Yes, no matter how right the wall may be and how wrong the egg, I will stand with the egg. Someone else will have to decide what is right and what is wrong; perhaps time or history will decide. If there were a novelist who, for whatever reason, wrote works standing with the wall, of what value would such works be?
What is the meaning of this metaphor? In some cases, it is all too simple and clear. Bombers and tanks and rockets and white phosphorus shells are that high, solid wall. The eggs are the unarmed civilians who are crushed and burned and shot by them. This is one meaning of the metaphor.
This is not all, though. It carries a deeper meaning. Think of it this way. Each of us is, more or less, an egg. Each of us is a unique, irreplaceable soul enclosed in a fragile shell. This is true of me, and it is true of each of you. And each of us, to a greater or lesser degree, is confronting a high, solid wall. The wall has a name: It is The System. The System is supposed to protect us, but sometimes it takes on a life of its own, and then it begins to kill us and cause us to kill others - coldly, efficiently, systematically.
I have only one reason to write novels, and that is to bring the dignity of the individual soul to the surface and shine a light upon it. The purpose of a story is to sound an alarm, to keep a light trained on The System in order to prevent it from tangling our souls in its web and demeaning them. I fully believe it is the novelist’s job to keep trying to clarify the uniqueness of each individual soul by writing stories - stories of life and death, stories of love, stories that make people cry and quake with fear and shake with laughter. This is why we go on, day after day, concocting fictions with utter seriousness.
My father died last year at the age of 90. He was a retired teacher and a part-time Buddhist priest. When he was in graduate school, he was drafted into the army and sent to fight in China. As a child born after the war, I used to see him every morning before breakfast offering up long, deeply-felt prayers at the Buddhist altar in our house. One time I asked him why he did this, and he told me he was praying for the people who had died in the war.
He was praying for all the people who died, he said, both ally and enemy alike. Staring at his back as he knelt at the altar, I seemed to feel the shadow of death hovering around him.
My father died, and with him he took his memories, memories that I can never know. But the presence of death that lurked about him remains in my own memory. It is one of the few things I carry on from him, and one of the most important.
I have only one thing I hope to convey to you today. We are all human beings, individuals transcending nationality and race and religion, fragile eggs faced with a solid wall called The System. To all appearances, we have no hope of winning. The wall is too high, too strong - and too cold. If we have any hope of victory at all, it will have to come from our believing in the utter uniqueness and irreplaceability of our own and others’ souls and from the warmth we gain by joining souls together.
Take a moment to think about this. Each of us possesses a tangible, living soul. The System has no such thing. We must not allow The System to exploit us. We must not allow The System to take on a life of its own. The System did not make us: We made The System.
That is all I have to say to you.
I am grateful to have been awarded the Jerusalem Prize. I am grateful that my books are being read by people in many parts of the world. And I am glad to have had the opportunity to speak to you here today.
