日曜（2012年9月23日）の「ソウル・ブレンズ」でジュニアの「トゥー・レイト」がかかった。DJのマーヴィンが「これは、DV（ドメスティック・ヴァイオレンス＝家庭内暴力）の曲だよ」と教えてくれた。
この曲の歌詞について気をとめてなかったので、これはびっくり。
マーヴィンの説明によると、「夜中よっぱらって旦那が帰ってきて、妻と子供にどなりちらす。妻を殴る。子供たちはおびえている。もうこんなことはがまんできない。もう遅い。もうだめ。私は出て行く。夫と別れる。もう遅い。もう戻れない…」といった歌だという。
だからちょっと物悲しい曲調なのだ。
家に戻って歌詞カードをチェックすると、なるほどシヴィアな内容だ。
そういえば、ジュニアには1983年にインタヴューしたなあ。
この「トゥー・レイト」は1982年5月から全米でヒットし、ソウルチャートで最高位8位を記録。
