【Brenda Vaughn Joins Otis Redding 70th Anniversary Event】

オーティス。

伝説のソウル・シンガー、オーティス・レディングが誕生して今年で70周年を迎える。オーティス生誕70年を記念して、オーティスの故郷ジョージア州メイコンで、今年の誕生日にオーティスのための記念イヴェントが3日にわたって行われ、日本からブレンダ・ヴォーンが参加する。

オーティス・レディングの誕生日は、1941年9月9日、命日は1967年12月10日。わずか26歳で飛行機事故で亡くなった。オーティスが活動した期間は実質的にはほんの数年程度だが、その間に残した作品の多くが現在でもソウル・クラシックとして高い評価を得ている。いずれの作品も20代前半の録音だが、その深みのあるヴォーカルは、とても20代とは思えぬ成熟ぶりを聴かせる。声、歌唱、表現力、楽曲の解釈力はどれをとっても天性のもので、オーティスが天才ソウル・シンガーと呼ばれるゆえんだ。メイコン市は、オーティスの誕生日9月9日を市として「オーティス・レディング・デイ」と制定した。

イヴェントは、オーティス生誕の地、メイコンで9月9日から3日にわたって行われる。

ライヴが行われるのは2日目の10日と11日。10日はここにオーティスの二人の息子、デクスター・レディングとオーティス・レディング3世、ティモシー・ブルーム＆Ｖ．ボーズマン、ブレンダ・ヴォーンらが参加。オーティスの楽曲を歌う。デクスターとオーティス3世は、かつて、もうひとりとレディングスというトリオで活躍し、アルバムも出した。

11日は、「ゴスペル・トリビュートによるオーティス」と題し、ゴスペル界の雄、カーク・ウェイラムがリーダーとなってライヴを行う。

“An Evening of Respect” a fundraiser and musical tribute honoring the life and legacy of Otis Redding. We will honor the Atlantic/Stax Family and many others who have continued to work and maintain the legacy of the “King of Soul”

A gospel tribute to Otis Redding “According to Kirk Whalum”- a gospel concert featuring the Grammy award winning performer and local youth and church choirs

○レディングス、ツアーの話も

【Reddings To Be On Tour? 】

計画。

まだはっきり確定していないが、デクスター、オーティス3世とブレンダらで、レディングスを再結成し、ミニ・ツアーをする計画が持ち上がっている。この9月のライヴが好評を博し、ツアー要請が盛り上がれば、全米各地を回るツアーの可能性もある、という。

★オーティス楽曲をサンプリングしたカニエ・ウエストとジェイＺ

【Kanye West & Jay Z Sampling Otis’s “Try A Little Tenderness” 】

フィーチャリング。

8月1日にデジタル配信、5日にCDが発売されるカニエとジェイＺのコラボレーション・アルバム『ウォッチ・ザ・スローン』からのシングル「オーティス」は、オーティス・レディングの「トライ・ア・リトル・テンダーネス」を大幅にサンプリング、フィーチャーしている。最終的には、アーティスト・クレジットに「フィーチャリング・オーティス・レディング」というクレジットが入ったが、これはオーティス側がリクエストしたもので、カニエ／ジェイＺ側も同意した。

オーティス楽曲に関しては、いまでも多くのサンプリングのリクエストが来ているが、それらを一手に仕切っているのが、オーティスの娘カーラ・レディング・アンドリュースと母ズレマ・レディングが運営する「ビッグ・オー・ユース教育の夢基金（Big "O" Youth Educational Dream Foundation）」という基金。

今回の話は、6月末にレコード会社経由で持ち込まれ、許可した、という。
